For the 2017 and 2018 field seasons, Forester Lynn Kolund contracted to measure Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plots in South Dakota. This is a National program of the research division of the U.S. Forest Service to conduct and maintain comprehensive inventories of the forest resource of the United States. About 20% of these fixed plots are remeasured every five years, and some plots were established decades ago. Each spring, a week of training is conducted using the 350 page technical manual in order to take accurate measurements in the field to assess land use, stand characteristics, insect and disease impacts.Tree species, diameter, height, damage, age and crown condition are some of the information and measurements taken.
This field experience helps to keep Mr. Kolund current and aware of the trends in forest use and condition in primarily the Black Hills of South Dakota.
